Nia is a technique that started in the early 1980's by two people, Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas. Nia is the work of Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas they were "guided by an idea that fitness could feel better, be fun and cater to the whole person." It is a movement form that did not happen overnight. Both Debbie and Carlos studied different forms of movements, different practices, and different arts. They brought moves and ideas together from three different arts and nine different movement forms.

In a Nia class we dance to a variety of music.

Nia's principles remain the same, it is a dance exercise that any BODY can do. Nia is meant for everyBODY because it uses the Body's Way. But it is understood that every BODY moves differently so safe freedom of movement is encouraged.

While Carlos (now known as Carlos AyaRosas) is no longer with the Nia Technique his routines and spirit remain a big part of Nia. Debbie is still very active in all aspects of Nia and continues to allow Nia to change and grow.

All ideas and information related to Nia is based upon their work. I often put it into my own words and state my understanding of it, but it is based off of what they have created. What has been copied from The Nia Technique Book, the Nia White Belt Manual, or the Nia Blue Belt Manual is marked as being copied from those books. Everything is used with the understanding that it is to educate people about Nia and help spread the Joy. The Nia Technique Book can be purchased from Amazon or through the Nia website. The Nia White Belt Manual and the Nia Blue Belt Manual is obtained by attending the respective Nia Intensives.

The follow video is from 2012.  Debbie Rosas, Nia Founder and Co-Creator, talks about her start with Nia.  She explains some of what Nia is and talks about how Nia is more than just a cardio dance.

Nicci Gates of South Africa posted the video saying, "Debbie Rosas' debut on South African television as she and Nia are featured on Free Spirit - a South African television programme -  in 2009. The 8-minute clip
features Debbie talking about Nia . . . ."
Since this video in 2009, NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) has been changed is it is now just Nia.
