Zumba classes are attended by MILLIONS of people every week.
I started teaching exercise/movement classes because I wanted to help people keep active and dancing is a great way to keep active, get exercise, and have fun. In order to communicate that with a larger number of people, I wanted to teach Zumba. As I said, millions of people participate in Zumba every week.
My initial experience with Zumba Fitness was fun but I left the classes thinking that it wasn't safe and there was a lot missing. After having taken the required Zumba Instructor Training, I see that the Zumba Fitness Program is constructed to be safe and meets with the general fitness guidelines.
Standard fitness guidelines include 10 to 15 minutes warm-up and at least a 5 minute cool down. This is considered safe for the general public. Since Zumba is marketed as being something everyone can do, the program incorporates these guidelines.
In addition to the safety of the participants, Zumba Fitness allows for the differences in participants, not everyone can move in the same way. So do your best, move your body in your way, have fun, and keep in mind that you are exercising so be aware of what your body is telling you.
